Honor Roll
WestportREADS “Our Vote, Our Future”
The names of the women listed here were active in Westport’s Votes for Women campaign.
Until now, their given names, faces and identities were unknown; more await to be revealed. Then there are those who did not live to see the federal government grant female citizens the right to vote, changing the lives of future generations of American women.
Some descended from families with ancestral ties to the area; others were first-generation Americans or recently arrived immigrants, new to town or summer residents. There were differences in education, wealth and religion—Quaker, Methodist, Congregational, Catholic and Jewish. Also their families represented an array of occupations from farmers and truckers, to bankers and physicians, to artists and plumbers. Several women were property owners, businesspeople and artists in their own right.
The convergence of their rich diverse paths through suffrage gave shape to our burgeoning town.
